Websites for General Math Help June 13, 2008

Here is the first in a series of posts that give great websites for math help.  These are great for any student high school, college or nursing students.  As most nursing students know your ability to score high on math tests for nurses (calculations, dosage, and IV calculations) can determine whether or not you can become an RN.  I have heard so many horror stories about students accepted into the nursing program who have all A’s.  But they get less then 90% on a test covering dosage calculation and they are kicked out of the program. So this series is to give students a place to refresh their skills before in nursing school and faced with these challenges.

Study and relieve stress? YES it is possible. June 9, 2008

Are you stressed for a big test? Need to study but just can’t seem to retain much? Perhaps you should try another method. A new study from East Carolina University says you should fire up a casual game. The gaming company PopCap underwrote the research, so much of the study is focused on games they offer. However, this can easily be translated into study skills. So, if you just aren’t getting anywhere or are getting stressed about upcoming tests try a study game.

Get a study group together for a game of trivia; everyone can bring their own questions and answers to put in the game. This will help you retain information better, if you hear several questions about the something worded different ways. Plus it starts a great support group for getting good grades in a challenging class. If you are enjoying yourself, your brain will release endorphins and that may help increase your power to retain information.

If you are looking for some solo games try StudyStack.com. John Weidner submitted this idea. Study stack allows a user to input information they need to learn in a ’study stack’ and then use it for flash cards, notes, or games. You can play matching games, hangman, cross word puzzles, word searches, and fill in the blanks. You can search other people stacks to see if anyone else is learning about cellular respiration, or photosynthesis, or human anatomy. You may be surprised at how many subjects are already covered.

Half of All Americans Wouldn’t Buy FrankenFoods…If They Could Tell The Difference June 6, 2008

A recent New York Times/CBS poll bears good news for ecopreneurs in the food industry. Fifty-Three percent of consumers said they would not buy genetically modified food. Unfortunately, there’s no way to tell the difference between Frankenfoods and the real thing.

A new CBS News poll found that 87% of consumers would like GMO ingredients to be labeled, just as they are in Europe, Japan and Australia. Yet the U.S. Congress has never even held a vote on the issue, to give shoppers the opportunity to exercise their most basic right - to make a choice.

Once again, labeling decisions made by the FDA and USDA, influenced heavily by big agriculture are keeping consumers from understanding what is in their food. The FDA’s position is: GMOs are the “substantial equivalent” of conventional crops and so does not require “disclosure of genetic engineering techniques…on the label.”Of course, there’s an explanation for that.

Flashcard exchange web site June 6, 2008

THIS WEB SITE DESERVES A MENTION!!!!

http://www.flashcardexchange.com

Next time you are studying something try this out. You can create you own flash cards and post them online for others. In turn, you can search and find flash card sets to download into word or excel for your own use. There are flashcards on virtually every subject ready to go. A great learning tool! You can use these as practice tests for classes, or as traditional study cards. What better way to practice then try to answer someone else’s questions!

This site will allow you to use flash cards in games, and will read the to you for the auditory learners out there.  Plus if you pay for membership you can study them on your PDA.  But since you can print them and take them with you there really isn’t a need.

I am definitely trying this for my next quiz!
